Eric Gardner, a familiar and trusted face on KOTA Territory News for over two decades, passed away Monday evening in Rapid City, South Dakota. He was 60 years old.
For more than 20 years, Eric served as the morning and noon meteorologist with KOTA-TV, bringing weather forecasts, warmth, and wisdom to households across the Black Hills. His presence on screen was more than just professional—it was personal. Viewers relied on his steady voice during storms and smiled along with him on sunnier days.
Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, Eric graduated from Ft. Worth Country Day School and went on to work in Montana, Wyoming, and Texas before settling in Rapid City. He joined KOTA Territory News in December 2002 and quickly became a vital part of the station and community.
Beyond the weather, Eric was known for his deep love of food and wine. A gifted host and culinary enthusiast, he produced dozens of food and wine segments for the station, delighting viewers with his tasteful recommendations and stories from behind the bar. He frequently hosted local wine tastings, earning a reputation as the region’s go-to expert in all things gourmet.
KOTA Territory General Manager Chris Gross reflected, “Eric was always a joy to be around. He loved the weather, loved wine and food, and loved our viewers. His passing will leave a big void in our hearts.”
His colleagues echoed that sentiment. In a statement, the KOTA Territory News staff wrote, “Eric was an amazing co-worker and a beloved part of the community here in the Black Hills. Our thoughts go out to Eric’s family and friends. We know Eric will be missed by all of you, as he will by all of us here at KOTA Territory.”
Tributes have poured in from across the region.
The Pennington County Democratic Party shared, “Our most sincere condolences are extended to Eric Gardner’s family. Eric was a talented and esteemed meteorologist… His engaging cooking segments and down-to-earth nature were truly special.”
Alena Neves Seven, a former colleague, posted, “Eric was one of a kind…with loads of class, style and pomp! He welcomed me to South Dakota and was always full of great advice—whether about cooking, wine, or people. Here’s a toast to you, Eric. RIP my favorite meteorologist.”
Meredith Garofalo, another former KOTA colleague, wrote, “Eric played such a major role in the success of my career. He brought joy to my life, and I hope he is sitting in heaven, sipping all his favorite wines at the feast of kings.”
Eric Gardner wasn’t just a meteorologist. He was a mentor, a storyteller, a culinary artist, and a cherished friend. His memory will live on in every forecast, every sip of wine, and every story told about his warmth and brilliance.
He is survived by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched across the Midwest.
Rest in peace, Eric. Your light will continue to shine across the skies you loved so much.
